“I can’t not do art”, says Sherill Hull, our latest Artist Outside The Box feature. Sherill’s deep passion for art started at a young age when she was given a paint by numbers paint set. Being a strong young lady and not liking being told what to do Sherill turned it over and painted her own masterpiece. Since then she has been painting and creating beauty for the world to enjoy.
Sitting down with Sherill made us think, how often do we stop to admire the colors and shapes around us? Many times we are unaware of the simple beauty that surrounds us, such as the colors in our everyday lives. This is what inspires Sherill. She wants her work to help people see, forcing them to slow down and admire the expansive beauty of art.
Sherill’s confidence in her art is unwavering. Many artists doubt their careers and opt for a “real job”, but Sherill says that no one around her doubted her ability to make a living off of her art. Rather than letting doubt slow her down, she says she would work harder if people did not believe in what she was creating. As a young female artist, Sherill felt this doubt for the first time with her college professor who said “the women were only here to find a husband”. Furious and filled with motivation, Sherill worked even harder to gain the knowledge and learn about art.
Sherill now paints and loves to use acrylic as it gives her the opportunity to create vivid paintings filled with color. She also enjoys drawing in pencil, although it has a lack of color, the subtleness of it leaves room for imagination.
Artists Words Of Wisdom:
“Just draw every day. Paint, draw, draw, paint, paint draw. It’ll happen especially if you decide you want it to happen it will happen, you can make it happen.”
We can learn a lesson from Sherill’s conviction. If you are passionate about something, do not give up at it. If you have people doubting you, it should not slow you down but rather inspire you to be greater.
