An integral aspect of our #WeAreKirkland message is to support local organizations, including local artists. Every two months we feature a new local artist with the help of the organization, Artists Outside The Box. With each artist, we learn something and are able to adore their art on our office walls as well as share it with our community here in Kirkland. Our most recent artist feature is Jodie Sarah Masiwchuk, an artist with a passion for animals.
With a previous career as a graphic designer, Jodie has always had a knack for creativity. Once she started a family, she found a way to feed her creative side while being able to stay at home, leading her to become a cartoonist. During this time Jodie created over 200 cartoons, publishing a few, as well as producing a book. Jodie says creating cartoons, “Was kind of like my own therapy”.
Jodie then decided she wanted to do something quiet that still gave her the ability to “say something”, leading her to a canvas and paint brush. Her first painting was of a cat, on a cloud, with a mouse on its head. She loved it so much she could not wait to get back to it the next day.
Vibrantly painted animals and wildlife jump off the canvas, as Jodie now paints animals she finds a connection to. Her passion for both art and animals is evident in her ability to capture the true emotion in the animal’s eyes.
Throughout an artists journey, there are always lessons to be learned, and Jodie encourages others to realize earlier than she did that you can create art and still make money.
Artists Words Of Wisdom:
“You really have to do what comes from your heart and what you are passionate about and that you have something to say and bring to the world. And don’t take criticism too hard because everybody has their own opinion and people love certain things and there is room for everybody.”
